West led diamond10 against 4spade and declarer won in hand. There was no reason to avoid drawing trumps and West won trick two with spadeA. Declarer seemed happy with prospects, and confidently won the next diamond in the dummy. When West showed out on spadeK it was to be expected, but when he also discarded on clubA at the next trick the situation for South was becoming desperate, as four losers looked unavoidable. After a few moments thought, South continued by cashing diamondQ, and when East followed with diamond7, the hand could be played double dummy. With East assumed to hold diamondJ on West's lead, he was know to hold four spades, four diamonds, four clubs and therefore a singleton heart. The watching crowd gasped as declarer discarded heartQ from hand, followed by cashing clubK and a trump to the queen in hand. The ace and two of hearts were next, throwing two clubs from dummy.
