A few tactical thoughts would be appropriate here. If you jump to 6diamond than the opponents may well profitably sacrifice in 6spade. Of course they might even double 6diamond and cash a couple of club tricks, but who can really tell with this sort of bidding!? If you bid 5heart, perhaps to be followed by 6diamond, then partner may well be able to evaluate his hand more precisely, but you can guarantee that the opposition will gain in a like manner. A tactical bid of 5diamond, to be followed by 6diamond over the likely 5spade, may be the winner as East-West will be unsure about sacrificing when you had been content with game.
