For many years I played Shearer opening three bids. The positional requirements for these consisted:

first-in-hand: thirteen cards
second-in-hand: 10-12 points, good six card suit
third-in-hand: any hand where you would not expect game opposite a passed partner.

Tony Forrester, sitting West, obviously subscribed to the Shearer principles for he opened 3diamond. North overcalled 3heart and eventually found himself in 4heart. East led diamond3. How do you plan the defence as West?
