Double dummy analyser: makeable contracts
Well, do you want to be in the grand? I reckon so. My correspondent had toyed with the idea of bidding 7spade as he was sure of a real club suit opposite. His suggested line of winning the lead, ruffing the diamond, cashing spadeAK, coming to hand with heartA and running the rest of the trumps looks OK by me. Although we would almost certainly go off if the clubs are five-nil (West would either have the clubs or make a Lightner double), then there is about a 75% chance of finding the clubs three-two or with a singleton jack. Add to that a somewhat unlikely heart-club squeeze and declarer's chances of reading the actual situation then the contract would be around 80%.
Note: please see the additionall chance spotted for 7spade by Anthony Golding in this deal. The details can be found at the end of the article on 23/05/2001
