Our first North liked the look of his heart suit and decided that he would have eight tricks in his own hand on a diamond lead. He therefore bid 2NT. East supported diamonds but South was not to be outdone and raised North to 3NT. West did not like the idea of strong No Trump values on his left when considering potential diamond contracts, but did however fancy his chances of beating 3NT, and applied the axe.

North had been correct in his assessment about the number of tricks as East led the expected diamond. However, when East showed out on clubA declarer was able to cross to dummy with a heart and take the marked club finesse. Eight tricks had effortlessly become nine. North-South +550.
