In the text, the author explained that the correct play was to lead a trump at trick three and play the ace! To put it simply, you are attempting to cater for a 4-1 break, and it is heavily odds-on that the it will be diamondKxxx opposite diamondx, but in 20% of the 4-1 breaks the king will be a singleton. You must guard against North having specifically singleton king by this recommended play of small to the ace. If, as is four times as likely, South turns up with diamondKxxx, you still have two more entries in clubs to lead further trumps towards hand and South will still be restricted to one trump trick.

The layout opposite is the one you have to guard against.
