In this situation a bid of a minor would be construed as an advance cue-bid, agreeing hearts as trumps. This ruled out 3club, and I expect most Wests would double to show a willingness to punish the opposition in at least of the minors. I wonder which one it was?

Anyway West made an interesting bid that reflected the higher scoring tariff of the major suits - 4heart. North decided at this vulnerability his partner would be quite strong and bid 5diamond. East was probably so convinced by the North-South bidding that he thought 5diamond might make, so he bid 5heart. North was probably so convinced by the East-West bidding that he thought 5heart might make, so he bid 6diamond. East finally made a bid with which no-one could quibble. Hooray.
