Having excellent trump control, Rose led his singleton diamond. Declarer won in dummy and played a trump to the king and ace. South underled his club honours and North won with the nine to give South a diamond ruff. spadeQ was the fourth and decisive defensive winner.

How did Rose know to underlead his clubs? Because his partner had bid 4club? Yes, but much more significantly North had thrown club10 on the second trick! This helpful and informative card promised the nine, so as long as East was not void in clubs Rose could be sure that the contract would be defeated as early as trick two.
