The contract is quite good, and on the non-trump lead, probably the best line is to win diamondA, cash spadeA and enter hand with a trump. A spade is ruffed high and trumps are drawn. If all have followed so far, the contract is cold - declarer makes twelve or thirteen tricks depending on whether the spades broke 4-2 or 3-3. If the spades are 5-1, as they were at the table, then something good like the heart finesse has to happen in the end-game.

Unfortunately for our beginner declarer, the spades were 5-1 and nothing else happened that was wonderful, but we all have to learn that sometimes the cards can be unkind.

16/03/2026 The DDA shows that 6club can be made, but after a quick inspection the right line on a diamond lead still eludes me. Any ideas?
