Personally, I would always open North's hand with 1spade. You have an easy rebid over anything might throw at you (2NT if she bids 2club or 2diamond, 4heart if she bids hearts) and you get your pre-emptive major in early. After all, we can't have partner playing the cards, can we?

Well, actually, yes we can. At the table North preferred the American style 5 card major system and opened the bidding with 1club, South bid 1spade and North raised to 3spade. All South's points were working wonderfully well and he had no hesitation in bidding the 10 trick game.
