East decided that although his shape was good, the suit intermediates were too poor to open the bidding. Passing on this type of hand can often lead to poor results as on many occasions a second chance to bid never comes - you can judge whether it turned out well here. When North bid 4heart it was too much for West to consider passing - despite the vulnerability. At red there was no chance that West would be bidding on garbage, so the good trumps, void and useful side suit made for an easy decision.

Not so with East's choice over South's 5heart. Eventually he decided that 5spade must be close and might be a good sacrifice against 5heart. Do you agree or think he was mad?
