If these declarers had tried a different strategy, they might have been more successful. South wins the third diamond and rattles off five rounds of clubs, subjecting West to pressure in three suits and East in two.

in the end position shown, West and East still have to play a card to complete the five card ending. Whatever cards they decide to keep, with the vital spade8 in hand declarer can always get home if he reads the situation correctly. Either he can duck a heart to make two heart tricks or play ace and another spade to end-play one of the opponents, when the end result is the same.
