North - South were playing 2spade as a two-way bid: either strong and inviting a Baron style bid-suits-upwards exchange, or a balanced raise to 2NT. The 1NT opener rebids 2NT to show a minimum 1NT or otherwise starts the Baron sequence with his lowest four card (or longer) suit. In this case South felt fully justified in cooperating and the game was bid. West had to find a lead.
