East noted that a friendly heart break would be enough for the contract and cashed heartAK to ascertain the position. When North showed out, declarer decided that South probably had nine cards in the majors and therefore would be likely to be short in diamonds. Wanting to cater for diamondAJx in the North hand, East decided to run the diamond10.

Declarer would have been better to cash heartA (to cater for singleton nine with South) and win the second heart with the queen. He would then be able to see South's (assumed) singleton diamond as he led towards dummy. Imagine the comments if South had started with singleton diamondJ!! The honest toiler was very fortunate when South had to win diamond10 with the ace. E-W +660.
