At other tables the bidding had gone 1diamond, 1spade, 3NT, All Pass. East led an "expert" spade3 and the effect was as before - the spades were blocked and four defensive tricks were the limit. I have some sympathy for East - it was well intentioned.

Gary Duddle - our leading player of this season - got it exactly right when he judged that partner would have a good suit for a vulnerable overcall and plonked spadeQ on the table. 3NT was killed stone dead as the defence took the first five tricks.
