The textbooks and experts will tell you that against this bidding you should lead an ace to have a look at dummy and then decide on how to proceed. The late Hugh Kelsey was a great advocate of such action. This was not the way to earn a game swing on this particular layout, for the spades were now blocked and the defence could only muster four tricks before relinquishing the lead.
