What happened next was that declarer took his eye off the ball. Needing only three diamond tricks, he should play ace and another diamond. South actually crossed to dummy with spadeQ and led diamondQ. Winning with the king, West switched to a club - won by East with the jack. Another heart was won by South, West ditching a spade, and declarer confidently cashed diamondA. When East discarded a club, suddenly nine tricks had become eight, but fortunately the distribution was such that he could still succeed. Declarer cashed all his black suit winners and end-played West with a fourth round of spades to force him to lead away from diamond10.

South was lucky to get away with it, but purged his sins with a full confession afterwards.
