The answer is that he probably shouldn't bid at all, although I know several players who would recommend 1spade. Our adopted South was in aggressive mode and decided that he fancied his chances with a sub-minimum 1NT because he was playing against weaker opponents. North quickly raised to 3NT and West led a small heart. East wins the first trick with ace, and returns the four.
