Double dummy analyser: makeable contracts
West North East South
4spade Pass Pass Pass(!)
At the two other tables West sensibly opened 4spade. It now takes excellent judgment for North-South to land on a 5heart sixpence. If North doubles, South bids 4NT to offer a choice of games. Again, after both minor suits are bid they should end in 5heart for plus 450.

Similarly, if North passes originally, South can protect with a double or 5diamond, or even 4NT to reach 5heart, but the situation still calls for common sense by both players.

As it happened, both of these North-South pairs were wimps and let West play there for a quiet minus 100.

All in all, none of the four North-Souths could be at all happy with their result.
