Suffice it to say that this board was a horror story for North-South. They eventually sold out to 3spade by West and allowed him to make it!

After three rounds of clubs West ruffed, cashed the diamondK and led spadeK. South won the spadeA perforce and, after noticing his partner's diamond2, dozily attempted to give her a diamond ruff. This was very poor defence, for even though North had not petered in diamonds, it was obvious what declarer was attempting. With 4heart or 3NT trivial, this was a shocking result. N-S minus 140.
