Did you just close your eyes and bid 6NT? Our man, who shall remain anonymous, passed rather tamely. You have a good six card suit, 16 points, many controls, and partner will have a very good club suit as he has not supported diamonds at any stage. As the cards lay, it would have been preferable to rebid 3NT, showing a balanced 15-16, over 3club. Partner would almost certainly go on to slam after this.

As a disadvantageous spade lead from West is avoided, 6NT by North has the extra theoretical chances of a spade finesse and/or possible / squeeze in the event of the clubs not breaking. At the table it did not matter as twelve tricks were on top when clubs broke 2-2.
