If you won the spadeA and tried to give partner a ruff, you would be disappointed. Declarer overtakes spadeJ with the queen and leads spadeK. You ruff, but declarer over-ruffs and plays top diamonds giving West an insoluble problem. Winning diamondA, he can only prevent a diamond ruff at the expense of his trump trick.

So what is East to do? Easy when you think of it - just duck at trick one! Declarer's sure entry to dummy has been used before he can unblock the clubs, and when East eventually comes in with spadeA, he can play a trump to remove the threat of a diamond ruff.
