* Herbert, less than 6 pts

West was visibly shaken to see South ruff at the first trick, but South decided to accredit West with spadeA plus spade length and promptly laid down spadeK at trick two. West might have been better advised to duck, but it would have made no difference. After winning with spadeA West switched to hearts, so South won, drew trumps and ruffed a diamond in dummy. The heartK was the vital entry to the winning diamonds. North-South + 1210.

So What was the unusual result? Most pairs were not playing Herbert and the bidding often died at 3diamond! It's not often you can legitimately bid annd make a slam when the majority failed to reach game, and North-South gained a well earned top.
