* Herbert, less than 6 pts

One possibility was to open with 2club - the South hand is certainly strong enough. However, the problem with opening 2club with strong diamond hands is that partner invariably responds 2diamond and the opener has to go the three level to show his first suit. South decided that the hand was ideally suited to Mr. Herbert's convention and opened 2diamond. When North responded with the expected 2heart, showing fewer than 6 points, South was able to rebid 2spade and thereby disclose both suits and a strong hand at a very economical level. North raised this to 4spade and South, knowing that his partner could not hold both high spade honours, bid the small slam.

Seemingly affronted, West doubled confidently. How would you play after the clubA lead?
