The Paradox of Bridge

There are several bidding paradoxes in bridge, and a few in the play too. Often it's right to quietly pass an opponents final bid when we can be 101% sure that the bid cum contract would be hopelessly doomed.

Sometimes it's right to double the opponents at the five level when we are sure they can make a grand slam.

Occasionally it's right to bid a grand slam when we are unsure about the possibility of even twelve tricks. Today's deal, which comes from the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup finals of 1981, covers both of these last two categories.
