The alternative line is to cash the ace first. If nothing exciting happens, you return to hand and lead another intending to play the queen. So you make the slam whenever the clubs are three-two and West has the king, OR East has the singleton king. In this latter case, you will have to return to hand to lead clubs twice towards dummy to limit West's clubJ10xx to one trick. Which of these two lines do you prefer?
