You'll remember that South opened 3spade with a horrible seven card spade suit and ace to four clubs in compensation. North, who obviously expected the compensation package, closed his eyes and bid 6spade. The question was, how should declarer play the contract on the lead of diamondQ?

The recommended line was purely technical: duck the opening lead, draw trumps and establish the last diamond. The alternative involved a little more scope for "table presence", that indefinable pre-requisite of all good players. Win the opening lead, draw trumps, ruff a diamond and duck a club, hoping for an end-play, a third club trick or an unlikely squeeze.
