When the inevitable double came, South duly found an unusual lead that his partner's double had requested, but it wasn't the one he wanted. The spade gave declarer a fighting chance and a boost of adrenalin.

Alas, there was no happy ending. After winning with the spadeA, declarer crossed to hand with heartA only to see West show out! The diamondQ failed to drop and South eventually finished six down for minus 1400. That was the bad news. But it was compensated slightly by the good news. They won the match .... and went on to win the Gold Cup too.
