Today's little teaser of a hand was played at TGR's in London by Howard Cohen, one of the best rubber bridge players in the country. TGR is short for 'The Great Rose' after the charismatic Irving Rose. Cohen's partner was another excellent player, Tom Townsend, a member of the victorious Great Britain team that won the Junior World Championship in the early 1990s.
The bidding style was typical rubber bridge. Few frills and direct. As Cohen, playing South, remarked Perhaps I should have replied 1spade ....... on the other hand, 2NT is more descriptive, and gets no-trumps in first.
