**Very optimistic punt

Today's deal occurred 30 years ago in a pairs event at a large congress. Unsurprisingly with pairs scoring, no-one found the easiest grand slam, 7club, and most played in 6NT or 6heart. A few masochists decided to try the horrendous alternative of 7heart, but more of that later. We'll concentrate for now on 7NT, where only one pair landed, albeit rather fortuitously.

After confidently employing the Grand Slam Force to ask for heart honours, he found that his partner's hearts were weaker than expected. Without any real justification, South convinced himself that North must have heartA and a very good, even solid, diamond suit to be able to make a reverse of 2heart. A little voice in South's head said '7NT', and the rest is history..

West led the diamond6. Select your line of play before reading on.
