when North has specifically the singleton eight... You should not win the first lead in hand and play a low diamond towards dummy for you will not know whether to finesse against South on the second round. No, you should win the opening lead in dummy and lead diamond9, running it if South plays low. If South covers then it safe to lead a low diamond to dummy's seven. Eventually you will enter dummy with heartQ and finesse against South's remaining diamond honour.
