At the table declarer ruffed a spade and followed with king and another heart. West was on play with only diamonds left and although declarer had no trumps remaining West had to give South access to the winning clubs via diamondQ. It was not easy to see but West would have done better to win the first club with clubJ to continue with spade9. A further spade when in with clubA destroys declarer's timing for the end-play and eight tricks is the likely result.
