East converted to 5club and the defence was the same, but this time declarer ruffed with clubJ from dummy. West now produced a slightly hairy line when he ran club10 at trick four! When that held he cashed diamondAK to dispose of two spades and drew trumps. Eleven tricks and 600 to East-West.

As the play went, declarer could have afforded to go up with clubA on the first round of trumps and re-enter dummy for the trump finesse with a fourth round spade ruff. However, if South has the presence to pitch a spade on the third heart then declarer must take a first round trump finesse. Or go down.
