. . . win with the ace and switch to a heart! At the table East had led heart5 to West's king so declarer ducked this trick and heart9 continuation, trying to sever the defensive communications. Rather than leave her partner with a losing option, East overtook the second heart and reverted to spades, thereby establishing a fifth winner before declarer could land nine of her own. East could also have switched to heartQ at trick three, but West must be careful to leave all defensive options open by unblocking the nine.

In the other room East had lamely switched to a club at trick three, handing South an overtrick.
