Because North had failed to open with a mini 1NT Trump, and yet probably had clubK to go with his heartAKJ, spadeQ was likely to be with South. diamondK was too vital a card to use as an entry for a finesse quite likely to be wrong, so after ruffing the third heart both declarers bashed out spadeAK. When the queen dropped from South on the second round declarer's winners were up to nine.
