The two elegant winning lines involve cross to the diamondA and ruffing a fourth club. If South follows then he would be likely to be 0-7-2-4 or 0-8-1-4, so declarer can cash diamondK and exit with heartK to end-play South .. always assuming that South has heartA of course! An alternative possibility is to exit with heartK immediately after ruffing the fourth club. This will gain when South has started with diamond10x, for declarer will simply cover South's diamond10 exit to smother North's queen. In theory this line also works when South starts with diamondQxx in a 0-7-3-3 shape, but it's a guess for declarer on which diamond to play from dummy.

At the table our unlucky hero East did play South for the 0-7-3-3 shape by simply taking a diamond finesse, so Steve and his partner were met by crestfallen team-mates, but not to worry .
