What about cashing just two trumps? In that way you can find out about the trump situation - if they're four-one then a favourable spade position is required. If the trumps break three-two then run spadeQ - North wins the king but you still retain a trump to accept the diamond force. After ruffing, cross to dummy with spadeA, draw the last trump and claim.

Note that a spade contract is much less problematic ... apart from the fact that there are only eleven tricks available.
