South reasoned that East, who would see absolutely no chance of a black suit winner, might have ducked the diamond in the hope of two tricks in that suit. Declarer deduced that East had not ducked because he had an additional chance of a trick - and that could only mean heartQ. South therefore rejected the trump finesse and cashed heartAK to land his slam.
