Declarer chickened out of the heart finesse and instead crossed to clubK before throwing her spadeQ on a third round of clubs. East switched to a heart and West craftily inserted the seven to prevent South getting to hand. On the club from dummy East ruffed in with diamondA, allowing West to ditch her last heart. A heart ruff completed a satisfying defence.

South had not played the cards to best advantage, but the defence had done well nonetheless. Had South doubled 2spade then +300 would have been probable.
