One West made a valiant attempt when he found the good lead of spadeJ. West having suppressed a strong urge to bid diamonds, declarer could have been forgiven for playing low in the hope that West had led from spadeKJ10. Had South adopted that line then East would have won with spadeK and switched to diamond10, subjecting South to the immediate loss of two diamonds and a trump promotion on the diamond continuation from West. Nevertheless South was a careful player and rose with spadeA at trick one. Two rounds of trumps made sure of his contract.
