. . . East found, to his horror, that he discarded spade5 on clubA! Although East immediately realised his mistake and fished out a third club spade5 was already confirmed as a penalty card. South immediately plonked spadeK on the table and poor East had to follow with the five! All that was needed now was to sniff out diamondQ and register 980.

It's hard not to feel a little sympathy for East . especially when the final deficit in the match was a mere 7 IMP.
