The other alternative was, of course, the one that declarer chose .. because it was right! At the World Championship the players always seem to guess well! After winning with clubA he cashed heartA and followed with four rounds of spades to dispose of his club losers. East had correctly sussed out the club situation and had played on spades in the hope that North had three spades and either a singleton trump or heartKx. The other, albeit highly unlikely, situation where this might have gained is if South had started with a singleton heartK.

In the other room East languished in 4heart and an 11 IMP swing was the result.
