So, cross to diamondA and finesse spadeQ. Cash the ace and play on cross ruff lines in the minor suits. Although it doesn't actually matter when East plays spadeK, say that East over-ruffs dummy when South ruffs a low club. To avoid an immediate end-play East leads a diamond so South ruffs, ruffs a club with dummy's last trump, ruffs a diamond with his own last trump and exits by playing a low heart from both hands. East has to win and return a heart to dummy's queen, so in all South makes four trumps in hand, two top clubs, diamondA, a club ruff in dummy and two hearts. At the table declarer ruffed a low club in dummy at trick two and lost five rapid tricks. As my friend says
I think the winning line only works when East has three trumps, but I knew about the heart break and the club lead looked very ominous. I think I should have got it right
