South, Omar Sharif, was playing with Pietro Forquet. Sharif did lead a club so East won and knocked out diamondA. With both red suits behaving kindly there were twelve top tricks. Not only had the opening lead failed to establish a second trick for North, but it had given East an easy twelfth trick into the bargain. In fact on a non-spade lead declarer can always get home on a black suit squeeze against North.
