This is a hand that never ceases to amuse me from a couple of years ago. The bidding needs a little bit of explanation!! I was playing with a Canadian who had just moved into the district and we were a very 'new' pairing. Obviously we were playing French Five Card Majors. When 1NT got around to me I knew that partner had at least a 16 count, probably 18. The French system meant that East almost certainly had a six card diamond suit and West would not have bid 1NT with a singleton. This means partner has at most one diamond. Furthermore I thought our discussion about doubles from him in this position over the 1NT would show a four card heart suit. I also deduced that he wouldn't have a solid club suit and it certainly wouldn't be a seven timer as he would have bid them again...
