Lucas two's are becoming a highly popular convention on the tournament scene these days. They combine a pre-emptive bid with the knowledge to partner that there might be another fit available. However like all defensive openers they give partner a headache when he is very strong. Having heard a 2 opener opposite (5-9 points with five spades and at least four cards in a minor) you enquire with 2NT only to find that partner is minimum (5-7) with clubs. What game are you going to bid? If you bid 4 you guarantee playing in a 5-2 fit but by settling on 3NT, the blocked spade position will mean that it is unlikely that you will able to run that suit. 5 could well have three top losers.
