If West had heartQ then was nothing that could be done to prevent the trump promotion so why was right to go in with heartJ at trick four?

Without heartQ, and seeing the threat of dummy's diamonds, it would look much more attractive to East to cash clubA first before playing a third spade - from his point of view where else could the setting trick possibly come from? The "mercurial" East's failure to cash clubA means that South is almost invited declarer to pitch a club loser on the spade continuation - and that's why South should not! South needs the diamond finesse anyway - so why not rely on the suit for four tricks?
