It doesn't look too difficult but several defenders on this deal from the 2001 Cavendish Pairs failed to come up with the right answer. All that is required is to lead a high spade at trick two. This still keeps the communication channels open and yet allows West to throw a spade when declarer starts rattling off diamond winners.

At the table West led spade5 at trick two - look what happened after South cashed four diamonds. East threw three hearts but West was forced to come down to a single spade honour. South continued with ace and another club to leave the defence stymied in this ending ..
