Have you ever played in a Match-Points event where it just seems such a slog to score well? I don't mean that you're playing particularly badly or the opposition running particularly hot, but more a case of too many lunatic scores at other tables. Well, it seemed like that last night. Take this pair for instance - I'd vaguely seen them before but as they had opted out of the qualifying competition I had assumed that they weren't very ambitious. On the first board I opened 4 and LHO had a textbook double. Eleven cold tricks when RHO bid 4. Bottom for us. On the second board they played in 2 on a 4-2 fit after a bizarre sequence which involved RHO rebidding a heart suit of 9xxx. Apparently LHO made the wrong response! Eh? 3NT was laydown. Top for us.
