North led heart5, covered, and won by the king from South who returned heart9 to set up the finesse position. Realising what the defence was up to, declarer ducked, so South switched to club9. West rose with the king, ducked by North to complicate declarer's communications even further. West crossed to dummy with a spade and led heartQ, won by South who switched smartly to clubJ, covered by the king and ace. After cashing diamondAK, North exited with spade10. Hoping for an end-play, West ducked, but South saved his partner from that fate by winning with spadeQ and putting dummy back in with heartQ. spadeA was declarer's last trick as South took the last two tricks with spade9 and heart8. The 2800 penalty was the largest ever recorded in Bermuda Bowl history.
